Pressures on the family unit are increasing in today's world, and the single parent, as sole earner and parent, with no partner to share these stresses, is under almost unbearable strain. The sad result can be a dysfunctional household, with health problems, inadequate parenting, financial crises, children acting out and failing in school...... however, it has been our experience that the right supports, at the right time, can stop this downward slide. The sense of community and the very real supports offered by the Single Parent Association are essential for the health of this fast-growing segment of our society.'- Excerpt from Single Parent Association Website. |

Back-to-school costs can be expensive for any family but for those with only one parent, these costs can be astronomical. Public Service Credit Union, together with Eastern Edge Credit Union and Reddy Kilowatt Credit Union, takes pleasure in helping community members overcome challenges. And so, we have launched an in-branch campaign to help SPAN fill the backpacks of school-aged children in our area.
Please visit us at 403 Empire Avenue, Eastern Edge at 31 Corey King Drive, or Reddy Kilowatt at 885 Topsail Road and help us help the children. Employees are selling colour printed backpacks for display in-branch. The suggested donation is $1.00 but, of course, any amount would be greatly appreciated. We’ll also gladly accept backpacks and/or school supplies!
Don’t delay! Donations are needed at SPAN by August 28, so time is limited.
We are also very pleased to partner with Kwik Kopy. Tony Cox and his team have generously donated their time and printing costs to produce the campaign collateral and we couldn’t be happier to work with this dedicated and professional group.
Remember the math → School + Empty backpacks = Many sad faces.
Please help us change the equation and generate a positive result!

Thank You from YACC
"Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC) would like to send a huge thank you to the awesome folks at Public Service Credit Union (PSCU) for their caring and creative contributions to this year's Shave for the Brave. They teamed with other Credit Unions across the Atlantic Provinces to create an initiative that we've never seen before. In an excellent example of unity they brought together their employees with their members through a series of incentives. They rewarded not just their own Credit Union but the government employees they serve with $500 head start cheques that ensured their cumulative contributions to YACC and to their community far exceeded that which could be achieved by making a one-time donation. Their unique approach, combined with the support of their community, resulted in $25,000 raised in support of young adults with cancer, and that enormous contribution doesn't event include totals raised by the individual government shaves they supported. For all their effort, ingenuity, and support we at YACC want to send all our appreciation and high fives to the Public Service Credit Union. Thank you PSCU!"

Public Service Credit Union offering $500 donation to government Shaves!
The Shave for the Brave at the Public Service Credit Union (PSCU) Empire Avenue branch had two incredibly successful Shavers; Sean Kilpatrick and Ian Barrett raised over $8,000 for possibly two of the most expensive haircuts ever performed in the middle of a bank!
Kilpatrick’s passion for the Shave began last year at the Newfoundland Labrador Housing Shave for the Brave. When he joined the PSCU board he combined his passion for the Shave with his drive to lead by example.
“I felt that the best way to demonstrate the Board’s support was to have a Board member be the first person shaved,” said Kilpatrick.
Once Kilpatrick was on board, Barrett knew he had to follow suit. Besides being the Manager of Finance and an eight-year PSCU veteran, Barrett had a personal connection with young adult cancer. His cousin, Kris Barrett, served on the Young Adult Cancer Canada Board after going through testicular cancer as a young man.
“It is something that impacted me directly and is a great cause to support,” said Barrett.
Their Shave was supported by Reddy Kilowatt Credit Union’s Duffy Place branch and Newfoundland Labrador Credit Union Charitable Foundation, both of which donated $500 each. PSCU supported their leaders with a $1,000 donation as did the Atlantic Credit Union who stepped up with a $2,000 donation. Newfoundland Labrador Housing also supported their Shave with $105 donation.
Throughout the Shave this year, the PSCU has been clear about their goal: They want government offices to get involved with Shave. They put their money where their mouth is by offering a $500 head start cheque to any government employees organizing a Shave for the Brave. So far Nalcor, Newfoundland Liquor Corporation, St. John’s Firefighters, and Atlantic Lottery have all taken advantage of their generous offer.
This isn’t the last Credit Union Shave scheduled this year and they are hoping that more government offices will come on board. If you are a government employee and you would like to receive a PSCU $500 head start cheque toward your own Shave please contact Kelly at Kelly@youngadultcancer.ca or call (709)-700-1972.
